Laser Hair Removal: What You Need to Know

Published April 23, 2026 · 3 min read · Prosper Health & Aesthetics

Laser hair removal is one of the most life-changing aesthetic treatments we offer at Prosper Health & Aesthetics. No more shaving every other day. No more razor burn or ingrown hairs. No more last-minute waxing before a vacation. For most patients, it's a permanent reduction in hair growth that pays back the investment for years.

Here's what to know before you start.

How Laser Hair Removal Works

The laser targets the pigment (melanin) in your hair follicle. The light energy is converted to heat, which damages the follicle and disrupts its ability to grow new hair. Because hair grows in cycles, multiple treatments are needed to catch each follicle in its active growth phase.

The result, after a series of treatments, is significantly less hair — usually 80 to 95 percent reduction in most patients — that grows back finer, lighter, and slower.

Common Treatment Areas

  • Underarms
  • Bikini and Brazilian
  • Legs (full or lower)
  • Arms (full or lower)
  • Face (chin, upper lip, sideburns)
  • Back and chest (especially popular for men)
  • Neck
  • Stomach line

How Many Treatments You'll Need

Most patients need 6 to 8 treatments spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart, depending on the area. Smaller hairs and slower-growing areas may need touch-ups beyond the initial series.

Hormone changes (pregnancy, menopause, PCOS) can stimulate new hair growth over time, so occasional maintenance treatments may be needed long-term — though far less than the original series.

What a Treatment Feels Like

The sensation is often described as a warm rubber-band snap. Modern lasers (including the platforms we use at Prosper) have built-in cooling that significantly reduces discomfort. Most patients tolerate treatments without numbing cream, even in sensitive areas.

Treatment time depends on the area: 5 to 10 minutes for underarms, 30 to 45 minutes for legs.

How to Get the Best Results

  • Don't wax or pluck between treatments. Shave only — the follicle needs to stay intact for the laser to target.
  • Show up clean-shaven (12 to 24 hours before).
  • Avoid sun exposure and self-tanner for 4 weeks before treatment. Tanned skin increases the risk of pigment changes from the laser.
  • Use sunscreen daily on treated areas.
  • Stay consistent with the schedule. Skipping appointments breaks the cycle and slows your results.

Who Is and Isn't a Good Candidate

Best results: patients with darker hair on lighter to medium skin (the contrast helps the laser target the follicle).

Modern advanced lasers (like the Alma platform we use) can also safely treat darker skin tones — though we'll always assess your skin type at consultation.

Less ideal: patients with very blonde, gray, or red hair (the laser has a hard time targeting follicles without melanin pigment).

Pregnant patients should wait. Patients on certain medications may need to pause.

Pricing at Prosper

We offer single-area pricing as well as our Laser Club membership ($199/month) which includes unlimited laser hair removal treatments across multiple areas — a fantastic value for patients planning a full series.
